With rapid population increase, and the growing scarcity of cropland, water, and fossil-fuel energy, it is an unprecedented challenge to provide sustainable solutions for food security while minimizing the global impacts of food production. Indoor agriculture holds great promise for helping to ameliorate this condition through efficient use of resources for crop production. Primarily, improving N- and P-use efficiency and energy efficiency are critical for higher agricultural productivity and resource efficiency of indoor production systems, i.e., hydroponics and aquaponics. In this seminar, I will discuss multiple strategies to enhance crop productivity and quality in indoor farming systems, by addressing improved technologies and new best-management practices optimized for the system.
