His research interests focus on developing cutting-edge technologies that enable precise engineering of plant genomes for functional analysis of genes and genetic networks, basic plant biology research, biotechnology, crop improvement, and synthetic biology applications. Specifically, in his lab, they use, develop, and improve genome-engineering technologies to understand plant responses to abiotic stresses. Moreover, they have engineered traits in different crops, including herbicide resistance, virus resistance, and changes in plant architecture. Genome engineering has revolutionized plant biology research; his group aims to accelerate and expand the scope of next-generation plant genome engineering, and help develop and implement technologies to address challenges in crop bioengineering and trait development and improvement as well as basic research on plant responses to abiotic stresses. His work also aims to improve agricultural production and contribute to bring a second green revolution and help reshape the future of agriculture.
