Title 1: Adapting plants to the changing atmosphere: an Asian challenge

Speaker: Prof. Kazuhiko KOBAYASHI

Time: 9:00am

Day/Date: March 28th,2019(Thursday)

Host: Prof.Yoji Kawano

Venue: No.3 meeting room

Abstract:

Ozone concentration near the land surface is rising in Asia, while it is declining or stagnating in Europe and North America. Ozone is the most widespread air pollutant negatively affecting vegetation, and its increase poses a major threat to food production and other ecosystem services in Asia. While air pollution control by regulatory agencies has traditionally been the major goal for scientific research to better quantify the ozone impacts on plants, I argue that we also need to seek measures to enhance plant tolerance to ozone to sustain the ecosystem services in Asia. For the latter purpose, better scientific understandings are crucial in the mechanisms of genetic and chemical measures for increasing plant tolerance to ozone. I would seek interdisciplinary collaboration between those who have been working on air pollution impacts and those who have been working in plant stress biology.

Title 2: Effects of Ozone Pollution on Crops in China

Speaker: Prof. Zhaozhong Feng

Time: 10:00am

Day/Date: March 28th,2019(Thursday)

Host: Prof.Yoji Kawano

Venue: No.3 meeting room

Abstract:

In this seminar, I will present the state-of–art of ozone pollution in China and its effects on crops as shown by different experimental approaches such as field survey, Open-Top Chambers, Free Air O3 Concentration Enhancement (O3-FACE), ethylene diurea (an ozone-specific chemical protectant), and meta-analysis. It is estimated that the current level of ozone concentration has caused a large loss of production (10-20%) in major crops such as wheat, soybean, rice, and potato across China. Within the crop species, we found significant differences among cultivars in their O3 sensitivity, whose mechanisms are of our current interest of research.

The seminar will be delivered in English.
