Science Talk Show by PSC Scientist during Shanghai Technology Week

2016-05-23

On May 20th, Prof. Alberto Macho from PSC gave a special scientific speech on the popular science activity Science_X in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The speech entitled “The plant immune system: helping plants to save our lives” introduced basic concepts of the plant immune system in a humorous and pleasant way, and concluded with remarks about the need to study plant-microbe interactions to achieve food security worldwide. Hundreds of science enthusiasts attended this annual scientific talk show. The science and technology week (Shanghai) committee, Shanghai municipal science and technology commission and International Channel Shanghai (ICS) organized this event.

Seven scientists, including two foreigners, Prof. Alberto Macho from Spain and the other from France, and one local science student gave speeches during this science show. Topics ranged from how plants are named, and black holes in the universe, to the use of big data in urban planning.

Members of the audience said that the show challenged some of their stereotypes about scientists, and realized that scientists are not always serious and distant people. In the interview, Prof. Alberto Macho said, “It is good to show that we are able to communicate with the public and make science more accessible to people. In that way, we are like anyone else.”

This program will be broadcasted on ICS at 8:00 pm June 1st, 2016.
